OCYAA holds 1st place in Little League pool play

By TOM WILLIAMS The Ocean City Youth Athletic Association’s Little League all star team defeated Hammonton, 7-1, on Monday at Harry Vanderslice Memorial Field in a battle between two teams that had won their opening games in District 16 pool play. Pitchers Evan Taylor and Colin Thompson combined to limit the Hammonton hitters. Hammonton had defeated Lower Cape May, 15-0, in its first game while the OCYAA had defeated Absecon, 12-2. Eddie Wisham and Cole Laursen hit back-to-back home runs that powered the Ocean City offense. Sean Mooney drafted by Minnesota Twins

By TOM WILLIAMS Ocean City High School graduate Sean Mooney was drafted today by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of the Major League Baseball Draft. The junior at St. John’s University will sign. “My plan was to sign if I got drafted,” Mooney said. “I’m ready to get down to Fort Myers and get back to throwing.” Mooney had Tommy John surgery on April 23 and is currently in rehab. “The arm is moving well and my training is progressing.” Mooney was 21-6 in less than three seasons at St. John’s with a 2.13 earned run average.
