OCYAA beats Lower, still undefeated in Little League play

By TOM WILLIAMS

Colin Thompson pitched a three-hit complete game Wednesday night to lead the Ocean City Youth Athletic Association all star team to a 9-1 win over Lower Cape May to remain undefeated in the District 16 Tournament of Little League Baseball.

The win left the OCYAA atop its pool standings (3-0) with one game left before the top two teams from each of the two pools will meet in a double elimination championship round set to start on Tuesday. The OCYAA will host Downbeach (Ventnor/Brigantine) Sunday at 5:30 at the Harry Vanderslice Complex on 35th Street.

Thompson had a another strong effort on the mound, working effectively with catcher Hank Schaefer. Luke Finnegan and Evan Taylor made key contributions offensively.

Upper Township, which was combined with the OCYAA during the regular season, has split two games in its pool play. Upper will travel to Somers Point on Friday and will finish pool play on Sunday at Greater Wildwood.

A number of ties are possible in the pool standings and the OCYAA is in pretty good shape with the Little League tiebreakers. In the first tiebreaker (fewest runs allowed) Ocean City has just allowed four in three games. Downbeach has allowed nine and Hammonton 14. The OCYAA also leads in score differential, a later tiebreaker, having outscored its three opponents, 28-4.
