It was 25 years ago that Prime Events created the Boo Pergament Awards for the most improved basketball players in the Cape-Atlantic League.
As you can see in the chart, below, many impressive players have been selected. Boo Pergament, who died in 2015, is a member of the South Jersey Basketball Hall of Fame who made a strong impact on area basketball.
This year’s winner is junior Nay Nay Clark of Oakcrest. She was a role player for the Falcons as a sophomore, averaging in low doubles figures. But in the 2019-20 season she averaged nearly 25 points a game, leading not only the Cape-Atlantic League but all of South Jersey. She is the 10th CAL player to lead South Jersey scoring and the first since Lower Cape May’s Lauren Holden in 2015. Holden and Wildwood’s Monica Johnson both led South Jersey twice and so did Oakcrest’s Jeanne Mohr in 1973-74.
Clark joins Ionyonia Alves as Pergament winners from Oakcrest. Alves, who had a successful freshman season at Stockton University, won the award last season. This marks the third time a school has had back-to-back winners in the 25 years the award has been presented.
In addition to her great scoring numbers, Clark led the CAL in steals and was among the top 10 in assists and blocked shots. Complete 2019-20 CAL Girls Stats are here.
That virus quarantine cancelled All Star Saturday, where the award would normally be presented. And The CAL Celebration on the Ocean City Music Pier, the year-ending awards ceremony, has also been cancelled so the award will be transported to Clark.
