OCHS – South Jersey Girls Soccer Champions!

By TOM WILLIAMS

The remarkable Ocean City High School girls soccer team became South Jersey champions today.

Kelly Halliday’s Raiders, who were undefeated conference champions, Cape-Atlantic League Tournament champions and reached the semifinals of the South Jersey Coaches Tournament before losing a shootout, won the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 3 title by defeating Mainland, 6-0, at Carey Stadium.

Ocean City (22-1-1) will next play Hopewell Valley in the state Group 3 semifinal Tuesday night (6pm) at Toms River North. The Bulldogs (17-6-1) defeated Allentown, 4-2, in today’s Central Jersey final.

“This game was very memorable,” said Halliday, the OCHS all-time girls soccer win leader who notched her 100th victory last week. “This team is so special and I’ve never coached a team more deserving than this one.”

Junior Faith Slimmer, a Rutgers recruit, broke the game open in the second half with three goals, giving her a school record 36 this season and breaking the school career record with 71 goals over three seasons. The previous record was 69 by Christine Jack from 1997-2000. Slimmer also assisted on a goal, increasing her school-record assist total for the season to 23.

Senior Carly Reighard scored her seventh goal in the first half to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead at intermission. Summer Reimet scored her 32nd goal and Hope Slimmer her seventh as part of the second half dominance.

Senior Abbey Fenton made four saves to record her school record 17th shutout of the season and 41st of her career.

“After the first goal went in the coaches knew we could breathe a little,” Halliday said. “From back to front we looked great today and I’m so proud to be a part of this special team.”

Hopewell Valley has a balanced attack led by Junior Emily DeNero with 18 goals and senior Charlotte Hare with 11. Freshman goalie Lucy Fleming has 97 saves and 10 shutouts.

Next up in this busy Ocean City week finds the boys soccer team (9-7-1) playing at Triton (17-5) tomorrow afternoon for the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 3 championship.

Then, on Saturday, the OCHS football team (6-2) is at Mainland (8-0) in a first round Group 4 playoff game and the undefeated Ocean City cross country teams run to defend their South Jersey titles at Delsea Regional in Franklinville.

It’s quite a week.
