Miles Schoedler is OCHS Boys Track Athlete of the Decade

By TOM WILLIAMS

Miles Schoedler was a two-time first team all star in the Cape-Atlantic League in the 1600 meters. He is the Ocean City High School record-holder in the 3200 and was also one of the decade’s top runners in the 800. And he ran against some of the very best.

All of that makes Schoedler, who won the Billy Schoppy Award as the top male athlete in the CAL’s Class of 2011, the right choice as Boys Track Athlete of the 2nd Decade (2010-19) at OCHS.

Schoedler was joined on the track by Josh Rolls, a two-time all star in the 100; Jared Jones in the 200; Geoff Ely, a two-time all star in the 400; Eddie Keenan in the 800; and Louis Paone, a first team all star in the 3200.

In the jumps, Jimmy O’Connor, a two-time all star in the high jump, is a repeat choice. He was also the all-decade high jumper for the First Decade (2000-09). The other jumpers are two-time all star Ryan Givens in the long jump; two-time all star and school record-holder Ed Albright in the pole vault; and both all star Luciano Lubrano and record-holder Ryan Givens in the triple jump.

In the throwing events, three-time all star Steve Jernee is the choice for the javelin, Ben Bethea for the discus and Mike Rhodes, who still has two more seasons of high school track, for the shot put.

The all-decade 4×400 meter relay team is Sean Zellers, Liam Bergman, Zelinski and Louis Conte. This time, since the NJSIAA has added two more relay races to its championship track meets, they have also been added here. The 4×100 team is Cian O’Donoghue, Bergman, Zelinski and Rolls. And the 4×800 relay team comprises P.J. Short, Ian Steele, Jesse Schmeizer and Jacob Davis.

Coach Matt Purdue guided Ocean City to wins in the Cape May County Meet all 10 times in the decade and brought the event back to Carey Stadium. In the end, success on the track in multiple events, advancing him to high levels of competition, made Miles Schoedler the best of the best. He joins John Richardson (1st Decade), Scott Lipford (1990s), Leon Brown (80s) and Terry Tracey (70s) as Ocean City High School Boys Track Athletes of the Decade.
