Six athletes lead CAL spring all stars

By TOM WILLIAMS

We like to call them Quad Stars. They are the student-athletes who are named to the Cape-Atlantic League’s first team four straight years in their sport.

The CAL All Stars for the spring of 2021 have been announced but, because the 2020 season was cancelled, there are no actual Quad Stars in this group.

But there are six who could be honorary Quad Stars because they were not only first teamers this spring but in 2018 and 2019, as well. We could easily imagine they would have been first teamers in 2020, given the chance.

There are two of these student-athletes on the tennis teams – Vince Coiro of St. Augustine and Max Gilbert of Middle Township.

Two of the other four include Holy Spirit’s Jim Dalzell in golf and Egg Harbor Township’s Lauren Princz in girls track.

The final two are athletes who finished their careers in 2021 at a different school than in 2018 and 2019. They are Jayden Shertel of Holy Spirit, formerly of St. Joseph, in baseball. And Brianna Bailey of St. Joseph, formerly of Wildwood Catholic, in softball.

Everybody is happy that the spring athletes got to have a full season in 2021 and there was a great deal of success.
