The OCHS revised 2020 football schedule

By TOM WILLIAMS

The West Jersey Football League (WJFL) announced today a set of new football schedules for 2020 that were adjusted to fit the NJSIAA requirement that fall sports not begin until Oct. 1.

Ocean City High School will play home games against Absegami, Millville and Mainland. The Raiders will be on the road against Oakcrest, Cedar Creek and Pleasantville. The game with the Greyhounds is scheduled for Thanksgiving.

There will be no championships determined this season. The schedules were just created so the student-athletes can have a season.

In addition, the second and third weekends of November have been set aside for the NJSIAA playoffs with four teams qualifying in each group. Schools that do not have a playoff game on either of those weekends are free to schedule consolation games.

In addition to the WJFL schedule, the Cape-Atlantic League is in the process of forming new divisions for other fall sports that will replace the American, National and United conferences for this year. The divisions are geographical to minimize travel – Cape May County, Cumberland County, Atlantic County 1 and Atlantic County 2.

In the proposal, OCHS soccer, cross country and girls tennis teams will compete in the Cape May County Division against Middle Township, Lower Cape May, Wildwood Catholic and Cape May Tech. The CAL is also considering inviting Wildwood, which is a member of the Tri-County Conference, to join the CAL teams for this season.

In field hockey, however, since there are less teams in the county, Ocean City would be included in one of the Atlantic County divisions.

Of course, all of these sports schedules for the fall are tentative and the final decisions will be determined by how the school year starts and by the New Jersey Department of Education, individual school systems and the parents of the athletes.
