Video Flashback: OCHS vs Shawnee for 1996 South Jersey Group 4 football title

Many people believe it was the best football team Ocean City High School has ever had – possibly the Cape-Atlantic League’s best.

In 1996, Gary Degenhardt’s Raiders played Shawnee – which came into the game ranked No. 1 in South Jersey – for the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 title at The College of New Jersey. Ocean City had defeated another highly-ranked team – Washington Township – 45-0 in the semifinals at Carey Stadium.

This OCHS team featured running back Kevin Sinclair, who is still the school’s all-time leader in rushing yards and holds 26 other school records. Other key players are wide receiver Scott Lipford, who holds eight school records, and quarterback Matt LeFever, who holds six.

There are no announcers on this video. produced by award-winning video producer Bill Shallcross, so, for those who don’t remember the details, Sinclair is No. 43, Lipford No. 12, LeFever No. 15, Ray Rogers No. 6, Mike Pfaff is No. 16, Austin Martin is No. 34, Mal Finch is No. 42, Greg LeFever No. 46, Pete Simon No. 52, Dan Siteman No. 74, Nick Bailey No. 75, Dennis Singleton No. 78, Ernie Nelson No. 88 and Matt Chila No. 89.

No. 24 for Shawnee is running back Bob Buchanan.

It was a great weekend for CAL football as Mainland, St. Joseph and Hammonton also won South Jersey titles.
