The decade that ended a couple months ago was one of Ocean City High School’s best in boys basketball. It started with an overall Cape-Atlantic League championship and ended with four straight seasons with 18 or more wins, something only done once before in over 100 years of basketball at OCHS. And the Raiders finished the decade with back-to-back 20-win seasons which was last accomplished by the Raiders 60 years earlier.
John Bruno completed his third decade as Ocean City’s head coach. Bruno and his staff put together 10 seasons of good basketball.
But you don’t do that without good players and the second decade of the 21st century had some.
The best of the bunch was Connor Laverty, who finished his career with 1,164 points, the eighth highest total in school history and most among players in the decade. He led the Raiders in points and rebounds two straight years and was a two-time first team all star in the CAL. Laverty is the Player of the Decade on a very well-balanced team.
Two other 1,000-point scorers join Laverty on the decade’s first team. Matt Bosch finished ninth in career scoring and led the CAL in scoring his senior year. Luciano Lubrano is 10th in career scoring and his 21.4 points per game his senior year was the highest of the decade at OCHS.
Joining them on the first team are Chris Curran, who was actually a second team pick in the previous decade. He only played a little over two months in this decade but they were strong months leading to that CAL championship. And Joe Sacco, a two-time all star, was the decade’s dominant guard, engineering the two 20-win seasons that ended the 10-season period.
On the second team is Tyler Reich, a powerful rebounder and shot blocker; Tom Ballezzi, a strong guard at both ends of the court; Donovan Graham, a smooth player who could score many ways; Chris Turner, a guard whose athletic skills made him extra valuable; and Luke Varallo, a strong two-way player who set three-point shooting records..
A new decade began on Jan. 1, 2020 so nothing that happened since then is taken into consideration for this 2nd Decade all star team.
