Rialee Allen is OCHS Field Hockey Player of the Decade

By TOM WILLIAMS

Like most fall sports at Ocean City High School, the field hockey program had a great decade from 2010-19. There were 194 wins in the 10 seasons, three state champions, seven South Jersey champions and nine Cape-Atlantic League champions.

The teams were coached by two outstanding field hockey players – Cory Terry and Kelsey Mitchell – who had great success on the field in both high school and college. They were able to translate their playing skills to coaching skills and communicate knowledge of the game to a decade of girls, much like Hall of Fame coach Trish LeFever had for 28 seasons before them.

With a record like that there were clearly a great number of talented players wearing the red and white during the decade. But one player stands out. During her career, Rialee Allen scored 25 more goals than any player in school history. And she had 40 more assists than any other player. Even more important, OCHS was 84-14 in her four years and played in the state final all four seasons, winning twice. That makes her the OCHS Field Hockey Player of the Decade.

But Allen was not alone in producing that great record. Two other forwards who join her on this all-decade team – Kelly Hanna and Jordan Allegretto – were teammates and two-time CAL all stars. The fourth forward is Liz Cruz, a two-time all star during the first two seasons of the decade.

In addition, four midfielders named to this all-decade team were also multiple CAL all stars who played on teams with Allen – April Stein, Julia Herrington, Shannon O’Reilly and Reese Bloomstead. The other midfielder is Jenn Staab, who played in the decade’s first season and was also on the previous All-Decade Team (2000-09).

Alexis Paone, Nicholl Fenton and Lauren McNally, who were selected to the CAL first team a combined seven times, also played on some of those teams from 2013-16. They are joined on defense by Casey Hanna and Ali Stever who both played early in the decade.

Filling the goalkeeper position is Maddie Kahn, a New Jersey all star who was selected to the USA U-19 Field Hockey Team.

It was a decade filled with talented players who worked together to produce great results. Rialee Allen sparkled among all of her talented teammates and joins Danielle McNally (1st Decade), Abbey Woolley (1990s) and Kristie Miller (1980s) as Ocean City High School Field Hockey Players of the Decade.
