OCYAA wins on Laursen’s walk-off hit

By TOM WILLIAMS

The Ocean City Youth Athletic Association’s baseball all stars stayed alive tonight in the District 16 Little League Tournament when Cole Laursen delivered a two-out RBI single in the 10th inning that produced a 6-5 victory over Hammonton.

The loss eliminated Hammonton from the double-elimination Final Four Tournament, leaving only Ocean City and Northfield. Those two teams will now play in Northfield Monday night at 7. Northfield is undefeated, including a 6-2 win over OCYAA, so with a win Monday, Northfield would repeat as district champions. If Ocean City wins on Monday it would force a Wednesday game between the two teams for the district championship.

Tonight’s game was moved from 5:30 in Ocean City to 7:00 in Hammonton because of wet grounds. But a rain delay, together with the extra innings, stretched out the contest. Laursen, who had hit a grand slam earlier in the week, delivered his game-winning hit just before 11:00 p.m. tonight.

The winner of the District 16 championship will begin play in the Section 4 Tournament with five other district champions next Saturday. The entire Section 4 Tournament will be played in Absecon.
