11 Cape-Atlantic football teams are in the NJSIAA Tournament picture

By TOM WILLIAMS

With three weekends left in the regular season, there are 11 football teams at Cape-Atlantic League schools who are in the NJSIAA tournament picture. Some are sure of a place in the tournament, others may need wins in the next three weekends.

Here are the details.

There is just one CAL team currently in the highly competitive Group 5 seedings. Atlantic City (5-1) is No. 3 behind No. 1 Washington Township (6-0) and No. 2 Southern Regional (6-0). If the tournament began this week the Vikings would host Toms River North (2-4). Atlantic City will play at Eastern (4-2) tomorrow night (Oct. 10) in a regular season game.

In Group 4, two CAL teams are among the top 16 this week. Millville (2-4) is No. 8 and Hammonton (1-5) is No. 15. If the tournament started this week, Millville would host Shawnee (3-3) and Hammonton would be at Manalapan (5-1). In regular season action this weekend, Hammonton hosts Seneca (4-2) and Millville has a bye. Incidentally, Hammonton must win one more game to be eligible for the tournament because a team must have at least two wins. All three of the Blue Devils’ remaining opponents are ranked in the South Jersey Top 25. The #1 seed in Group 4 entering this weekend is Winslow Township (4-2).

There are four CAL teams currently in the wide-open Group 3 picture. Cedar Creek (5-1) is currently #4, Pleasantville (4-2) is #5, Mainland (3-3) is #9 and Ocean City (3-3) is #14. If the tournament started this week, Cedar Creek would host Triton (4-2), Pleasantville would host Neptune (5-1), Mainland would travel to Ewing (4-2) and Ocean City would go to Holmdel (3-2). In regular season action this weekend, Cedar Creek hosts Lower Cape May (5-1) on Thursday. On Friday, Pleasantville is at Oakcrest (2-4), Ocean City hosts Middle Township (0-6) and Mainland plays Egg Harbor Township (1-5) at the Mustang Corral. The #1 seed in Group 3 right now is Burlington Township (6-0).

In Group 2, Lower Cape May (5-1), which has put together a surprising season so far, is the #13 seed and, if the action started this weekend, the Tigers would travel to #4 Rumson-Fair Haven (4-1). In regular season action tonight (Thursday), Lower plays at Cedar Creek (5-1). The #1 seed in Group 2 right now is Camden (4-2).

No CAL team is currently eligible in Group 1 where the top seed is Glassboro (6-0).

In Non-Public A there are only eight teams in the state and they all qualify for the tournament. St. Augustine (4-1) is currently seeded #4 and would host St. Joseph-Montvale (4-1) in the first round. On Friday, in regular season action, The Prep is at Lenape (0-6). The top seed right now in Non-Public A is Don Bosco Prep (5-0).

And in Non-Public B both CAL teams are currently in the tournament picture. St. Joseph (4-1) is the #7 seed and Holy Spirit (2-3) is #9. If the tournament started this week, St. Joe would host St. Mary (3-3) and Spirit would travel to St. Thomas Aquinas (4-2). In regular season action this weekend, St. Joe is at Atlantic Tech (2-3) on Saturday and Holy Spirit will host Delsea (3-3) on Friday. The leader in Non-Public B, the #1 seed, is Red Bank Catholic (6-0).
