There will be four basketball games at Ocean City High School on Saturday plus a silent auction in the hallway outside the Dixie Howell Gymnasium. It is the annual Butch Gleason Memorial Coaches vs Cancer Day and all funds raised will all benefit the American Cancer Society.
Gleason got the event started 15 years ago and it was named in his memory years later when he died.
The day begins at 2:30 in both high school gyms with junior varsity games – OCHS girls vs Cape May Tech and OCHS boys vs, Lower Cape May.
At 4pm, the Ocean City girls will play Cape May Tech in a varsity game that will be preceded by the official dedication of the plaque memorializing the late McKenzie Helphenstine.
At 6pm the OCHS boys will play Lower Cape May. That game is scheduled to be preceded by a reunion of members of the 1964 state championship team. Members expected to attend include John Cranston, Barry Banks, Rick Howell and John Laudenslager. And NFL TV analyst Mike Lombardi will be there representing his father, who has voted Outstanding Fan in 1964.
Also prior to the boys varsity game, teammates of Connor Laverty will present the game ball to Coaches John Bruno and Scott Holden.
