COLUMN: Segich, Chevere, Schlatter & Sakers made history

By TOM WILLIAMS

There were lots of historical moments in the 2022-23 Ocean City High School basketball seasons and the rest of the Cape-Atlantic League – including playing 27-30 games in 76 days. But four OCHS players created there own piece of history.

DOUBLE FIGURES: Ocean City High School has been played varsity basketball for nearly 90 years and one thing has only happened three times – four players on the same team finishing with double-figure scoring averages.

Until now.

This season, Kori Segich (15.0), Omera Chevere (13.3), Dylan Schlatter (10.1) and Sean Sakers (10.0) wrote their names into history and became the fourth OCHS quartet to accomplish that fete in nearly a century of basketball.

It happened first in 1959-60 under Dixie Howell when Ken Leary (16.4), Gary Satrappe (16.3), Jim Bernosky (14.7) and Warner Christy (10.6) all scored in double figures.

Then, Jack Boyd’s 1983-84 team did it – Matt Watts (16.7), Homer Baker (15.2), Dennis Jones (12.2) and Joe Jones (10.3) put up the numbers.

And, on John Bruno’s 1995-96 team, it was Steffon Davis (15.8), Sharif Thompson (13.4), Quan McCray (13.2) and Mike Ludwig (12.3).

Segich, Chevere, Schlatter and Sakers have now joined that historic list.

500 POINTS: Chevere, Schlatter and Avery Jackson all joined the list of Raiders who have scored 500 or more career points.

Chevere finished his career with 662 points – only 40 Raiders have scored more. Among the players he outscored were Tom Adams, Barry Banks, Joey Sacco, Tim Taccarino, Rick Lipford, John Huff and Terry Howell. Schlatter, a junior, went over the 500-point mark in the South Jersey final at Moorestown, finishing the season with 506 points. There are 67 Raiders with 500 or more points in boys basketball.

And Jackson, a four-year varsity player, finished with 772 points, the 19th highest total among OCHS girls. On that same list – at No. 4 – is Stephanie Vanderslice (now Gaitley) who scored 1,363 points as a Raider. A total of 40 girls scored 500 or more for OCHS.

SJ CHAMPIONS: Speaking of Gaitley – her team’s run through South Jersey Group 3 that culminated with the upset win over Mainland in the championship game, was a relief to her. As a player at Ocean City, she played in three South Jersey finals and lost all three. She still grits her teeth when asked about the memory.

This year marked Ocean City’s 18th appearance in the South Jersey girls final – 11 by Paul Baruffi, two by Chris Lentz, four by Pat Dougherty and now one by Stephanie Gaitley. It was the 10th South Jersey championship for the Raiders.

The OCHS boys reached the South Jersey final for the 13th time – three under John Bruno, one under Jack Boyd, seven under Dixie Howell, one under Ed Cardner and twice under Von Henroid in 1937 and 1938. The Raider have won six South Jersey boys titles.

OCHS joined Middle Township in winning a South Jersey girls title this year. It was the sixth championship for the Panthers, the second under John Leahy.

Also, eight CAL basketball teams played in South Jersey championship games this season, an impressive number. Make it nine in the area by including the Wildwood girls.

SCORING CHAMPIONS: Justin Harper of Wildwood Catholic (22.0) and Emma Peretti of Hammonton (17.8) were the scoring champions of the Cape-Atlantic League this season.

Harper is the first from Wildwood Catholic since Anthony Raffa in 2007. One other Crusaders’ player – Dan Leahy – won in 1988. Peretti is the first girls scoring champ from Hammonton since Christina Smith in 1993. Cindy Pierce also won while playing for the Blue Devils in 1991.

TOC: We could be previewing the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions here but the NJSIAA decided it was no longer needed (except in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track). It would be nice to find out if Roselle Catholic is the best boys team in the state or if Manasquan, Ramapo or Paterson Eastside could knock them off. And, with St. John Vianney and Rutgers Prep gone on the girls side, it would be wide open.

But no.
